{"id":309,"date":"2007-12-06T09:49:05","date_gmt":"2007-12-06T09:49:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulwmartin.ca\/blog\/?p=309"},"modified":"2011-07-29T16:01:32","modified_gmt":"2011-07-29T16:01:32","slug":"18-years-ago-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paulwmartin.ca\/blog\/?p=309","title":{"rendered":"18 years ago today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every year on December 6, I mark the anniversary of the <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.cbc.ca\/IDD-1-70-398\/disasters_tragedies\/montreal_massacre\/\">Montreal Massacre<\/a> by taking a moment of silence in class after reading the names of the murdered women. Talking to my students, the vast majority of whom have never heard of the events of eighteen years ago even though it happened only about 90 minutes from here, I cannot help but compare their lives with those of the women murdered at the \u00c3\u2030cole Polytechnique.<\/p>\n<p>People across Canada today, and especially on university and college campuses, will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canada\/montreal\/story\/2006\/12\/06\/qc-montrealmassacre061206.html\">marking this anniversary<\/a> with speeches, candlelight vigils, and moments of silence. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day coincides with the sad anniversary of the death of fourteen young women who were tragically killed on December 6, 1989 at l&#8217;\u00c3\u2030cole Polytechnique in Montr\u00c3\u00a9al because of their gender.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year on December 6, I mark the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre by taking a moment of silence in class after reading the names of the murdered women.
