The Handmaid’s Tale: online course materials (2005-2011)

With all the interest in The Handmaid’s Tale of late, I’ve decided to post all of the materials on Atwood’s novel that I created for an online course I taught back at UVM between 2005-2011. Please feel free to let me know what you think. These materials were all created after having taught the book in face-to-face classes for years and were part of a larger online course on three writers from Canada: Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, and Jacques Poulin.

You’ll find some fairly thorough written lectures and a few rough but, hopefully, helpful audio lectures I recorded on the fly during a marathon all-night recording session in my office. If you’re interested in The Handmaid’s Tale or studying it for a class. I hope you’ll find these useful.

You can find these materials by looking through the Teaching area of my website or by following this direct link: http://www.paulwmartin.ca/courses/the-handmaids-tale/

The materials I wrote and recorded for this Atwood section online course were rooted in my cobbled-together teaching notes and from years of reading and interpreting the novel alongside my fellow learners (AKA my students). If you find any places where I may have failed to fully attribute any ideas to the work of other scholars who’d written about the novel before me, please do let me know so that I make any necessary adjustments and attributions. Any such oversights are purely accidental on my part.
